The CSU Shiley Haynes Institute for Palliative Care at CSU San Marcos shares a campus home with the systemwide Institute, but has a local focus, working to create innovative programs that expand awareness of and access to palliative care in the diverse communities of San Diego County.
Shaping Programs for Students, Professionals, Caregivers, & the Community
The CSU Shiley Haynes Institute for Palliative Care at CSUSM develops and hosts a wide range of programs to build awareness and improve access to palliative care in the San Diego region. The Institute’s signature “What Gives Your Life Meaning” campaign has received widespread acclaim. Held annually, it encourages people over 18 to think about what shapes their quality of life and to complete advanced directives that reflect those values.
Elevating Palliative Care Awareness and Education in San Diego County
CSU San Marcos is one of the fastest growing campuses in the 23-campus CSU system and is a model of innovation and community engagement. The CSU Shiley Haynes Institute for Palliative Care at CSUSM shares a campus home with the systemwide Institute, but is focused on creating innovative research, education, and awareness campaigns to elevate palliative care in the local community.

The CSU Shiley Haynes Institute for Palliative Care at CSU Monterey Bay is committed to creating research and educational programs designed to make palliative care more accessible to the diverse communities along California’s northern Central Coast.
Expanding palliative care education, awareness along California’s Central Coast
Cal State Monterey Bay is a public university in Seaside, California, along the state’s northern Central Coast. The CSU Shiley Haynes Institute for Palliative Care at CSUMB is engaged in research, education, and awareness programs aimed at expanding access to high-quality palliative care in the surrounding communities.
Leading research on palliative care education in Monterey County
At the CSU Shiley Haynes Institute for Palliative Care at CSUMB, Faculty Director Alyssa Erickson is leading research on how to best deliver palliative care education to health professionals in Monterey County. The feasibility study will shape a plan to help local clinicians deliver high quality, culturally appropriate care to people with serious illnesses and their families. In 2019, the project was awarded a $60,000 grant by the Hospice Giving Foundation.


Building Awareness through Campus Partnerships

The Institute supports its Campus Partners in several ways, including identifying funders for research, helping with grantwriting, and sharing faculty resources.
