Palliative Care Across the Lifespan: Knowledge, Skills and Resources for Speech-Language Pathologists for Students and Practitioners (co-sponsored by Kaiser Permanente)

The goal of this workshop is to facilitate a strong understanding of palliative care for speech-language pathologists and to make SLPs more aware of their expanding roles in palliative care work across acute care and long-term care settings with adults and children, who present with varied health conditions, with an emphasis on interdisciplinary team management, evidence-based decision making, reimbursement issues and ethics in end-of-life care. The presenters will highlight how SLPs need to counsel and partner with caregivers with special attention and sensitivity to diverse populations. This workshop is offered for 0.6 CEUs.

Institute Faculty Director – Nidhi Mahendra, Ph.D., CCC-SLP
Dr. Nidhi Mahendra is an Associate Professor of Communicative Sciences and Disorders at California State University East Bay (CSUEB). Serving as CSUEB’s Faculty Lead on the collaboration with the CSU Institute for Palliative Care, she also directs the Aging and Cognition Research Clinic at CSUEB.
Certified as a bilingual speech-language pathologist, she has worked across the lifespan and specializes in working with older adults and those with dementia, aphasia (a communication disorder resulting from a stroke or other brain injury) and dysphagia (swallowing disorders). A core aspect of her research focuses on identifying spared and impaired abilities in dementia and aphasia, and designing interventions to optimize cognitive and communicative functioning.
Dr. Mahendra also specializes in ethnogeriatrics, barriers influencing minority clients’ access to health care and multicultural issues that influence clinical service delivery. She was the 2006 recipient of the Editor’s Award conferred by the American Journal of Speech Language Pathology and the 2012 recipient of a national Certificate of Recognition for distinguished contribution to multicultural affairs, awarded by the American Speech Language Hearing Association.
