Cal State L.A., was founded in 1947 and is committed to both community engagement as well as educating the future leaders of tomorrow. Taking it a step further, Cal State L.A. has combined their interest in community engagement with its primary role of educating by making it an academic requirement that its students engage with those in the communities surrounding the college.

PBS documentary “Being Mortal” – a screening and discussion. The film is narrated by Dr. Atul Gawande, a renowned author and surgeon. He shares his own personal experiences as well as others of the relationships doctors have with patients nearing the end of life. Small group discussion will follow.

Institute Faculty Director – Beatrice Yorker, JD, RN, MS, FAAN
Beatrice Yorker is the Dean of the College of Health and Human Services at California State University, Los Angeles. She received her Nursing degree from Indiana University, her Master’s in Child Psychiatric Nursing from the University of California, San Francisco and her Law Degree from Georgia State University. She was formerly the Director of the School of Nursing at San Francisco State University, and taught Nursing at Georgia State University and Emory University. She has a wealth of clinical experience and is actively supporting interdisciplinary collaborative simulation learning in a variety of disciplines.
