OUR SUPPORTERS
Unified in our mission
Individuals and organizations committed to improving care and quality of life for people with serious illnesses have supported the CSU Shiley Haynes Institute for Palliative Care since its inception. Their generosity has helped the Institute further its mission and create new palliative care courses that address critical healthcare needs.
The impact of Darlene Marcos Shiley
The CSU Shiley Haynes Institute for Palliative Care was launched in 2012 by several CSU system leaders and generous supporters passionate about improving serious illness care for generations of patients and families. Early visionaries included then CSU Board of Trustees member Robert Achtenberg, then CSU San Marcos (CSUSM) President Dr. Karen S. Haynes, the California Health Care Foundation, Archstone Foundation, Hearst Foundation, and San Diego philanthropist Darlene Marcos Shiley.
Mrs. Shiley’s impact has been particularly profound. Her commitment to expanding access to palliative care was inspired by her experience caring for her husband, Donald, as he approached the end of his life.
Mrs. Shiley’s total giving to the Institute and the CSUSM Foundation has surpassed $6 million, establishing her as the most generous donor in the university’s history. In May 2019, the CSU Board of Trustees changed the name of the Institute to the CSU Shiley Haynes Institute for Palliative Care in recognition of Mrs. Shiley’s generosity and unwavering support.
Our global reach
Since 2012, more than 21,000 health professionals from the US and 43 countries worldwide have enrolled in the Institute’s high-quality online courses. In addition, more than 25,010 undergraduate students and 23,404 community members have participated in palliative care outreach and education programs through our campus partners across the CSU.
Our home at CSU San Marcos
The CSU Shiley Haynes Institute for Palliative Care, a systemwide initiative of California State University, is headquartered at CSU San Marcos (CSUSM), one of the fastest growing campuses in the 23-campus system. CSU San Marcos was selected to launch the Institute because of its history of innovation, interdisciplinary academic qualifications, model community engagement, and commitment of its campus leadership.
