Aromatherapy Course Announced

Professionals and Volunteers Can Complete Online, Self-Paced Course

San Diego, Calif. – January 6, 2016 csupalliativecare.org. The California State University Shiley Institute for Palliative Care is launching its latest self-paced course for those working in palliative care. Aromatherapy in Palliative Care is a convenient, online course that introduces health professionals and volunteers to the use of essential oils to ease symptoms and promote well-being. Aromatherapy has been used for centuries and has a growing base of research and support for its role and efficacy in modern health care.

Aromatherapy Eases Symptoms of Disease

Helen B. McNeal, Executive Director of the California State University Shiley Institute for Palliative Care, commented about this course: “Not only do diseases take their toll on the health of the body, patients with chronic or life-threatening illness often face nausea, fatigue, anxiety and depression. In the hands of a skilled and caring individual, aromatherapy can ease discomfort and improve well-being physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually for patients, and even their care givers. This course is perfect for both health care professionals and volunteers interested in adding aromatherapy to their care toolkit.”

The four hour, self-paced course covers information about the more commonly used and available essential oils. It provides a variety of resources and instructions on the safe and effective use of essential oils, discussion on application methods, and selection of essential oils used for a variety of symptoms and concerns for patients.

Validated and Evidence-Based Training

Aromatherapy and the array of benefits it provides to patients, especially those in palliative care, is being recognized and is rapidly growing in use. In the face of today’s palliative care workforce challenges, aromatherapy offers an increasingly validated approach to easing symptoms and increasing well-being that can be part of what any program or caring professional offers.

Participants on this course will learn about the evidence and research, and gain the skills to support safe and effective incorporation of aromatherapy into care protocols. This course will help professionals and volunteers launch their journey into the world of aromatherapy for palliative care patients and their families.
