Nominations Open for Annual Doris A. Howell Award for Advancing Palliative Care

November 4, 2021 (SAN MARCOS, CA) – The California State University Shiley Haynes Institute for Palliative Careis seeking nominations for the annual Doris A. Howell, MD, Award for Advancing Palliative Care, designed to recognize a physician, advanced practice provider, nurse, social worker, chaplain, or other health professional whose contributions, dedication, and compassion have helped advance palliative care in San Diego County.    

This award is accompanied by a $25,000 gift to the organization with whom the recipient is affiliated. The gift is made possible by San Diego philanthropist and palliative care champion Darlene Marcos Shiley.

Nominations will be accepted through midnight November 30. The winner will be announced in December. 

The award is named after the late Dr. Howell, a legendary physician and pioneer in pediatric hematology, oncology, and community medicine and founder of San Diego Hospice and the Institute for Palliative Medicine.    

To be eligible for the Doris A. Howell, MD, Pioneer in Palliative Care Award, a nominee must be a health professional in the greater San Diego area who exhibits the pioneering spirit in caring for the suffering embodied by Dr. Howell. Nominations will be evaluated by a panel of palliative care leaders, including members of the Institute’s National Advisory Board and executive leadership.  

Past recipients of the award include Dan Hoefer, MD, and Suzy Johnson, MPH, RN, Sharp HealthCare (shared); Gary Buchholz, MD, FAAHPM, UCSD, and Kim Bower, MD, Rady Children’s Hospital (shared); Christine Knutson, RN, PHN, MSN, retired; and Ami Doshi, MD, Rady Children’s Hospital.
